Accessibility and Usability in Big Interview Educational Materials

Skillful Communications (and the Big Interview service) is committed to making its educational materials accessible to users of all abilities.

Through a dedicated company-wide task force, the assistance of outside experts and consultants, and feedback from users, Skillful continuously seeks to identify and evaluate opportunities for improving the usability and accessibility of our products and services.

Accessibility Practices

WCAG: As of March 2010, Skillful policies require all new website development to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, Level AA, as recommended by The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Following these guidelines, Skillful content is accessible to a wider range of people with disabilities, including blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, learning disabilities, cognitive limitations, limited mobility, photosensitivity and many others.

Audio-Visual Materials: For many years, Skillful-produced videos have included closed-captioning. Since September 2011, audio-visual materials used in Skillful products are required to be close-captioned with accompanying transcripts.

Online Courses and Homework Solutions: Skillful offers compatibility with most assistive technologies.

Big Interview offers high contrast and well-structured HTML, and more accessibility to users with assistive technologies.

Big Interview pages conform with Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act: working with screen readers, and providing keyboard navigation and more usable forms. We continue to re-engineer Big Interview for all users by converting Flash content.

Future releases will include additional visual options and further accessibility of problem sets. All digital solutions support browser settings for high-contrast narrative text, variable font sizes and multiple foreground and background color options.

Skillful has teamed with the Inclusive Research Design Centre (of OCAD University) and other industry partners to identify barriers for continuous improvement towards better accessibility for all.

More importantly, we engage actual students using assistive technologies in our product evaluations.
